Attempting to Bridge the Gap Between the "Then & Now' in a World Without Jamie

Goodbye, ‘Good Grief’ Day

Omg …. This was one of those awkward and so emotional, “how is my favorite boy???” Questions… Jamie’s old preschool teacher❤️

From 10 years ago today when I ran into Jamie‘s old preschool teacher who hadn’t heard about Jamie’s accident 😢

Just when I thought I was having a “good grief” day , as I like to call them… the days when I am otherwise preoccupied with my “new normal” as opposed to spending too much time in the past visiting those coulda /shoulda/ woulda ghosts that tend to rear their ugly heads from time to time, this happens… It’s always so hard to run into someone who knew Jamie but does not know about his death. Tonight, I ran into Miss Sally (don’t know her last name), who took care of baby Jamie McHenry at Children’s World Daycare at the corner of Scott Rd and Nesbit. Miss Sally ABSOLUTELY LOVED Baby Jamie. Everyday I would drop him off in there before heading to work and Miss Sally would start talking in baby talk in whatever her native language is, smothering him with kisses and nibbling on his cheeks… and he would just giggle. Miss Sally took care of Jamie for around 2 years and every night I would pick him up and she would jokingly say, ” no , you can’t take my boy”. I will never forget on the night before Sept 11th, Sept 10th, 2001, I went in to pick up Jamie McHenry and heard “some” screaming child in hysterics. I was 8mths pregnant with Emily and walked in on Miss Sally, holding Jamie down with a compress as blood spilled from his eyebrow. It scared me to death. He had fallen on the corner of a table and had a huge gaping gash above his eyebrow. Miss Sally wrote the note below which I keep in Jamie’s baby book. Jim was in Seattle for work, so I had to take him to the immediate med that night to get stitches. The doctors had to put him in one of those contained “straight jackets” to keep him from thrashing around while he got stitches. I remember him looking up at me and screaming, “mommy no!, mommy no!” and I felt so helpless for the poor kid and remember thinking I never, ever want anything bad to happen to him again…. The result was a permanent scar, above his left eyebrow visible in most of the pictures I post of him like the one below. He would later refer to his scar as his “sexy” scar that all the chicks dig..

Tonight I saw Miss Sally in Moe’s and she immediately remembered me and started to ask about my “little Jamie”. I had to tell her what happened to him as the Moe’s workers just stared at us and we both were crying and hugging. I didn’t think Miss Sally was ever going to let go of me, standing there in Moe’s. I gave her one of the #liveforjamie wristbands. Grief is like that and takes on all different forms when you least expect… a song, a smell… or running into someone from the past.

There’s the note Miss Sally wrote with that ominous date!

Always remembered forever loved never forgotten
